WhichCraft’s Collective Charity

Thank you all for your generous support as we continue to bring supplies to those affected by Harvey. It seems Mother Nature isn’t done with us, so keep bringing in non-perishable food items, water, and toiletries to either location and we’ll make sure it gets in the hands of those who need it. And we raised nearly $2,000 from last week’s Silent Auction, with all that money going toward the Houston Food Bank. You guys are awesome!

And this Sunday we roll over to a new month, which means a new Brewery of the Month. We break from the usual six pack deals to focus on a brewery churning out some fantastic sour beers: Collective Brewing Project. If you’ve never tried any of their brews, I am so sorry, but here’s your chance to fix that! All month, pick up a bottle of their Petite Golden Sour, Suspicious Delicious, and Urban Funk House for just $8.99.

New Beers This Week

(All beer available at both WhichCraft locations unless otherwise noted)

Back in Stock: Chimay White, Real Ale Codex Triplex, Live Oak Oaktoberfest, Martin House Queen of the Mist, Austin Beerworks Heavy Machinery Wet Hop, Alesmith Speedway Stout, Independence Cucumber Redbud, Oskar Blues Ten Fidy

Firestone Walker Leo V Ursus: Inferos – Inferos is an imperial rye IPA that is fiery in color and hellacious in hoppiness. Forged with 25 percent rye grain and loaded with more than four pounds of hops per barrel, Inferos is ultimately a big, spicy beer that will keep the soul warm when a chill is in the air. 8.2% ABV / Paso Robles, CA / Availability: Limited

Bell’s Roundhouse – Substantial amounts of late-kettle hop additions and dry-hopping yields a heady blend of fruity aromas of pineapple, peach, and citrus. Those aromas continue into a crisply bitter hop presence across the tongue, but the judicious use of toasted and caramel specialty malts prevents the hop intensity from overwhelming the palate. Locally sourced Michigan honey creates a smooth, dry finish that pulls everything together. The India Red Ale style is a variation on the IPA, but with more caramel and toasted malt character and a reddish hue. 7.5% ABV / Galesburg, MI / RateBeer 97 / Availability: Decent

Champion Amarillo by Morning – This is a big, juicy, double IPA bittered with Apollo hops and dry hopped with equal parts Summit and Amarillo for a heady nose. 9% ABV / Charlottesville, VA / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

COOP Saturday Siren – Inspired by weekly siren tests, Saturday Siren is a crisp and refreshing pilsner built for summer days. Dry hop additions of Idaho 007 and Comet bring new world flavor to this old world style. The lake, the pool and the grill are calling, so pack the cooler and get outside. 5.3% ABV / Oklahoma City, OK / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

Tallgrass Strawberry Shortcake – Wheat Ale with a beautiful aromatic strawberry flavor and a cake-like vanilla richness for a delicious experience with one of America’s favorite dessert treats. 6% ABV / Manhattan, KS / Availability: Good

Tupps Full Grown Jack – Pumpkin-spiced imperial stout. 12.5% ABV / McKinney, TX / Availability: Good

Founder’s Breakfast Stout – The coffee lover’s consummate beer. Brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, bitter and imported chocolates, and two types of coffee, this stout has an intense fresh-roasted java nose topped with a frothy, cinnamon-colored head that goes forever. 8.3% ABV / Grand Rapids, MI / RateBeer 100 / Availability: Good

Lagunitas Sakitumi – This Raging Bull’uva Double-ish IPA is punched with Sake Yeast and rice, then hopped-up for a cold-clip of counter-balanced bitterness. 9% ABV / Petaluma, CA / RateBeer 96 / Availability: Decent

Deep Ellum Hop Seeker – Hop Seeker is a 100% wet-hopped ale with fresh cut Centennial hops in the initial boil and Equinox in the dry hop. Notice a pronounced aroma profile with citrus, tropical fruit, floral and herbal characteristics. 5.6% ABV / Dallas, TX / Availability: Good

Oasis Technicolor Motorhome – Sour London Porter fermented with a special strain of Lactobacillus, then dosed heavily in the fermenter with black currants and liberally dry-hopped with U.K. Challenger. 4.2% ABV / Austin, TX / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro Cans – Pouring hard out of the can, Milk Stout Nitro cascades beautifully, building a tight, thick head like hard whipped cream. The aroma is of brown sugar and vanilla cream, with hints of roasted coffee. The pillowy head coats your upper lip and its creaminess entices your palate. Initial roasty, mocha flavors rise up, with slight hop & roast bitterness in the finish. The rest is pure bliss of milk chocolate fullness. 6% ABV / Longmont, CO / BeerAdvocate 88 / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

Alaskan Coffee Brown – English malted oats, English chocolate malt, and pale malt roasted coffee beans at Heritage Coffee Co, Simcoe hops, and addition of Brazilian and Ethiopian coffees. 7% ABV / Juneau, AK / RateBeer 94 / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

Alamo Oktoberfest – A traditional Bavarian Festbier dedicated to the celebration of the coming of fall. A dark & malty lager with a smooth balanced finish. 6% ABV / San Antonio, TX / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

Abita Peach Lager – Fresh Louisiana peaches are handpicked for this smooth lager. Pale malt gives the beer a sweet, crisp taste, with abundant amounts of ripe, juicy peaches added in the brewhouse to capture the flavors and aromas of real, fresh fruit. All their Harvest Series brews are made with the finest Louisiana-grown ingredients. 4.5% ABV / Abita Springs, LA / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

Abita Pecan Ale – Pecan Harvest Ale is made with real Louisiana pecans that have been toasted to perfection. That makes it something really special, because most beers with a nutty flavor or aroma aren’t made with real nuts. The natural oils from the Louisiana pecans give the ale a light pecan finish and aroma. 5.2% ABV / Abita Springs, LA / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

Karbach R&D New England IPA – Hazy, juicy, New England-Style IPA from the boys down in Houston. 6.6% ABV / Houston, TX

Great Divide Velvet Yeti Nitro Introducing the newest and smoothest member of the Yeti family, Velvet Yeti. Argus Vinho Pearde – A lagared Perry with green apple notes and a tart, citrus finish. This is a Perry designed for summer time. 6.8% ABV / Austin, TX

Live Oak Helles – Helles, first cousin to the pilsner, is the daily drinking beer of the Bavarian people. The crisp, bright lager contains slightly less hop bitterness than pilsner, highlighting its soft, pale, malt flavors. Cold fermentation and lagering produce a beer that is brilliant and clean. Please enjoy this beautiful artifact of a culture that places enjoyment of this fine lager bier at the center of society. 4.4% ABV / Austin, TX

Austin Beerworks Heavy Machinery Wet Hop IPA Easily, the most special brew in the series because this can only happen once a year. Last year it was a Thursday. On the day their farmer in Oregon harvests the Centennial hops, they start brewing. He boxes them up, kisses the label, and ships them via Southwest Airlines Cargo (faster than FedEx). So within 12 hours of being picked, it’s dropped into the kettle. That’s a wet hop. It’s the greenest, brightest, extra-juiciest flavor that you can’t duplicate any other way. The sooner you drink it, the fresher the flavor. Don’t cherish this one – drink up! 7% ABV / Austin, TX / RateBeer 92

Celis White – This signature witbier sparkles with remnants of coriander and orange peel, and will take you back to the first taste, made famous by the legendary “Father of Witbier,” Pierre Celis. 4.9% ABV / Austin, TX

Celis Citrus Grandis IPA – New England IPA made with the finest Azacca hops, this zesty Caribbean-inspired brew hides juicy citrus aromatics in its hazy golden depths. It’s full-bodied, it’s refreshing, it’s bliss in a beer. 5% ABV / Austin, TX

Style Night with a Vengeance

We’re celebrating our threequel for the next Style Night with the Beer Museum. We’ve done SMaSH IPAs, Berliner Weisses, and for this third installment, we break down Oktoberfests. Prost, y’all! On Tuesday, September 19th, Certified Cicerone Lindsay Compton will walk you through five different samples of this traditional German style, explaining the ingredients used, the beer’s history, and the similarities and differences between the beers. Tickets for the 6:30 and 8:00 sessions are found at the links. Reserve your spot now (Lederhosen not included).

And our continued thanks to those who have donated materials to our food and supply drive to help those affected by Harvey. You can still bring in any non-perishable food items or toiletries or bottled water to either location and we’ll make sure it gets in the hands of those who need it. And be sure to drop by the Mueller location tomorrow, Friday, September 15, from 5-8pm: we’ll be running a silent auction along with a tasting event starring Houston’s own Saint Arnold Brewing, and all proceeds from the silent auction will go toward the Houston Food Bank. We will also have a concurrent event running at the South Lamar location with its own unique prizes. And oh my me, the prizes you can win. Check out our Facebook page for a list of prizes, along with a list of food and items we’re looking to deliver to the people in Houston and the surrounding areas. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Along with the other specials posted below, make sure to pick up a 6 pack of Hops & Grain River Beer for $4.99 at both locations. You’re reading this right, get in now before they’re gone, because once we sell out, this deal rides off into the sunset.

Finally, we posted earlier this week about needing to hire a few fantastic people to join the WhichCraft family. Along with positions open for general beer geeks to work at both locations, we’re losing one of our coffee experts and managers, so the search is also on for a person who can train new employees, set and maintain quality control standards, be a great steward of our coffee program, and help formulate new seasonal coffee specials, along with maintaining our relationship with our roaster partner. We look for people who are passionate about customer service, who are always active and on the go, not to mention love beer and coffee and look forward to talking with customers about both of these things. Retail or service industry experience is a plus but not required. We’re currently hiring for both locations, ranging from one to five shifts per week depending on your availability. Multiple days and time slots are open, so email resumes and availability to jody@whichcraftbeerstore.com. We want YOU to work at WhichCraft with us.

New Belgium Sour Saison – Brewers worked tirelessly to brew an exquisite French-style Saison, while their industry-leading wood cellar team worked to mature the perfect sour golden ale in large, French oak barrels called foeders. Odell Rupture – Rupture was born out of an obsession with getting the most out of each and every hop. In fact, they built a machine in their brewery to incorporate a unique fresh grind process. By grinding the whole hop, they “rupture” the lupulin inside – releasing the oil that gives the beer its flavor. And what they grind that day, they use that day. Leaving you a beer that’s fresh, aromatic, with an unparalleled bright, hoppy character. 6% ABV / Fort Collins, CO / RateBeer 94 /  Availability: Good

Sweetwater Blue – Sweetwater Blue is a unique, light-bodied ale enhanced with a hint of fresh blueberries. This euphoric experience begins with an appealing blueberry aroma and finishes as a surprisingly thirst-quenching ale. 4.8% ABV / Atlanta, GA / Availability: Good / SoLa Only

Southern Star Yard Cutter Kolsch – A tribute to St. Arnold’s Fancy Lawnmower Beer. They stayed true to the original recipe from the original SABC brewery, then added extra hops towards the end of the boil to make it more spicy and floral, but still true to the original. This is a light, refreshing beer, perfect for a hot summer day after mowing the lawn, or cutting the yard. 5.1% ABV / Conroe, TX

Odell Sunny Rain – Brewed in honor of all the parents of young kids, Sunny Rain is an American-Style Pale Ale featuring the Australian hop variety Ella. Each sip is full of layers of hop flavors including citrus, pine, and fresh grass, artfully created through a blend of 6 different hops. 6.2% ABV / Fort Collins, CO

Weathered Souls Rule 4080 – All-Citra pale ale, dry hopped once with Citra hops. Mild bitterness, low ABV, subtle malt character that brings out the beer. Very hop forward on the nose. Fruity characteristics from Citra: citrus, pineapple and mangoes.
