New Beers This Week

Back in stock: Lone Pint Yellow Rose, Jester King Snorkel & Wytchmaker.

(512) Funky Kingston – We always love when we get a chance to buy (512) beers since they typically only keg their beer. Funky Kingston began as a copper ale made from Organic 2-Row, Pilsner and CaraMunich malted barley and Organic wheat. Its primary fermentation began in late 2012 in stainless with a mixed yeast culture of brewer’s ale yeast. Soon after, it was racked to American oak Cabernet barrels where Brettanomyces and Pediococcus bacteria were added. The Brett slowly created a funky and earthy flavor and aroma and, more recently, lactic acid from the bacteria has appeared, adding smooth background sour notes. Funky Kingston is indeed a special blend of malt, funk, sour and oak. 7.4% ABV/Austin, TX/No ratings yet/Availability: very limited

Avery Beast – Avery’s Grand Cru, this is brewed with two-row malted barley, honey malt, and imported Belgian specialty grains (aromatic, pale wheat, roasted wheat, and Special B), hops (Magnum, Galena, Saaz, Hallertau, Tettnang, and Hersbrucker), brewing sugars (raisins, dates, blackstrap molasses, alfalfa honey, turbinado, and dark Belgian candy sugar), water, Belgian yeast and another hellion of a yeast strain. 16.9% ABV/Boulder, CO/Ratebeer 97/Availability: very limited

Save the World Apocalypse Quad – STW’s latest special 750mL release is a rich, dark & malty Belgian quadrupel. Dark fruit flavors and aroma are quite present, along with Belgian candi sugar richness & sweetness. The dark horse in this brew is the use of brettanomyces yeast to add a hint of tartness for a well rounded and complex brew. 9% ABV/Marble Falls, TX/No ratings/Availability: plenty

Green Flash Green Bullet Triple IPA – A full-bodied Triple IPA, Green Bullet combines New Zealand grown Pacific Gem and Green Bullet hops. Significant pine and citrus hoppiness hit the palate at first sip, accentuated by tropical notes of mango and pineapple, ending with a moderately aggressive, bitter finish. 10.1% ABV/San Diego, CA/Ratebeer 97/Availability: decent

Uinta Oak Jacked Imperial Pumpkin
– Jacked is brewed with fresh pumpkin and fall spices and has been aging in Oak barrels for 6 months. The oak barrels add subtle nuances of toasted vanilla and bourbon notes. With an ABV of 10.31% (a play on the date of Halloween), Jacked is a big, unique pumpkin ale. 10.31% ABV/Salt Lake City, UT/Ratebeer 97/Availability: limited

Victory Festbier – Subtly sweet with a delicate malt nose, Festbier gains its body from the use of all imported German malts and decoction brewing process. 5.6% ABV/Downington, PA/Beer Advocate 85/Availability: plenty

Sierra Nevada Ovila Barrel Aged Belgian Dubbel – The reserve collaboration series that Sierra Nevada does with the abbey of New Clairvaux is one of the coolest series they do. This time they took their Belgian-style Dubbel and aged it in both red wine and bourbon barrels. Sounds delicious! 8.5% ABV/Chico, CA/No ratings/Availability: limited

Green Flash Natura Morta Plum – Natura Morta Plum begins as a Belgian-style Saison fermented in foudres with Brettanomyces, then is aged in red wine barrels with Italian plum puree. After six months, a pink hued ale emerges. Elegant and flavorful, it renders notes of tart plum, rosewater and almond, balanced by barrel-drawn tannins and a refined dry finish. 5.5% ABV/San Diego, CA/No ratings yet/Availability: extremely limited

Brooklyn Quintaceratops – Brooklyn Quintaceratops started life as a batch of Brooklyn’s “prehistoric” quadrupel-style ale called Quadraceratops. It then spent months in Trinidadian rum barrels and a victory lap in American bourbon barrels rendered the beer deeply funky like the rums of old, with flavors of tobacco and molasses. 10.9% ABV/Brooklyn, NY/No ratings yet/Availability: very limited

Clown Shoes Rexx – Clown Shoes continues their impressive barrel aging program, this time with a turn of their imperial red ale in Heaven Hill & Four Roses bourbon barrels. 12% ABV/Ipswich, MA/No ratings yet/Availability: decent

Hops & Grain Greenhouse #27* – It’s back again! This time with Hersbrucker, Jaryllo and Mosaic. 7.7% ABV/Austin, TX/No ratings/Availability: plenty/*Arriving Friday

Texian Donkey Lady – Named after a famously “haunted” bridge in San Antonio, Donkey Lady started as Texian’s popular Charlie Foxtrot Imperial Berliner Weisse. It was then aged on apples and spices for a tart but fruity finish. 7.1% ABV/Richmond, TX/No ratings yet/Availability: limited

Sam Adams Honey Queen – A Braggot, historically a harmonious blend of mead and beer, gained notice during medieval times and dates back as far as the 12th century. The combination of three unique honeys and the complexity of the hops and chamomile in this braggot style beer create a whimsical brew that is floral with a tart sweetness and a much awaited honey finish.  7.5% ABV/Boston, MA/Beer Advocate 85/Availability: plenty

Crown Valley Imperial Pumpkin Smash – One of the most popular pumpkin beers last year, Imperial Pumpkin Smash is deliciously roasted with dark chocolate and toffee notes with a hint of smoke and a little spice from the hops that give it a pine note. The pumpkin adds body and character for a great beer. Comes in 4 packs or singles. 10.6% ABV/St. Genevieve, MO/Ratebeer 96/Availability: plenty but will go fast

Stevens Point Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale – Also one of last year’s faves, this one is brewed with pumpkin and spices. Hand crafted using real pumpkin and savory pumpkin pie spices and hints of all natural cinnamon and nutmeg. Perle hops balance with rich Munich, Roasted, and Caramel malts for the full-bodied taste and exceptional flavor. 7.5% ABV/Stevens Point, WI/Ratebeer 94/Availability: plenty but will go fast

We have two new 5 Stones Barrel Reserve beers arriving this Friday: the Barrel Reserve Spanish Monk & Barrel Reserve Aloha Piña. Both are standard beers that spend time in chardonnay and tequila barrels, respectively. Small batch and unique, just like all 5 Stones brews.

Southern Tier Pumking (now in 4 packs!)* – The king of pumpkin beers is back, and this year in 4 packs! Imperial Pumpkin ale brewed with actual pumpkin flesh for a very gourdy flavor. Malty sweetness, vanilla, clove, allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, pie crust. 8.6% ABV/Lakewood, NY/Ratebeer 98/Availability: plenty/*Arriving Friday
