WhichCraft Beer Store would like to congratulate Jeff Young and Blue Owl Brewing Company on exceeding their fundraising goal in their attempt to map the sour beer microbiome. This project aims to increase our industry’s understanding of sour beer by deciphering the relationship between mixed culture microbes and the acids they produce. This research could eventually increase the diversity of sour beer available to us in Austin and have major implications for the sour beer industry at large. For more information on this exciting project, and to contribute further to this research please visit Blue Owl’s experiment webpage here.

Prairie Americana – A dry-hopped farmhouse ale. Brettanomyces conditioned. 7% ABV / Tulsa, OK / Ratebeer 99 / Availability: Decent
Alesmith Lil Devil 6pk – This unfiltered Belgian-Style Pale Ale pours a hazy gold with a creamy white head. Ground coriander seeds and two kinds of orange peel added to the kettle contribute pleasant citrus notes to its Belgian fermentation character. 5.75% ABV / San Diego, CA / Ratebeer 92 / Availability: Limited
Alesmith Wee Heavy – This Scottish-inspired deep mahogany-colored ale showcases a rich, malty flavor profile of caramel and toffee offset by hints of roast and subtle smoke. The complex malty sweetness includes notes of dark fruit balanced by a subdued hop bitterness. Wee Heavy is incredibly nuanced and in a class of its own in terms of balance and sophistication. It ages very well and will keep improving for years to come. 10% ABV / San Diego, CA / Ratebeer 100 / Availability: Limited
Alesmith Speedway Stout – Chocolate and roasted malts dominate the flavor, supported by notes of dark fruit, toffee, and caramel. A healthy dose of roasted coffee from Ryan Bros. Coffee, Inc. added to each batch brings out the beer’s dark chocolate flavors and enhances its drinkability. 12% ABV / San Diego, CA / Ratebeer 100 / Availability: Limited
Odell Zard-Alu – Apricots shine bright, while peach and pear-like flavors mingle in the background, as Brettanomyces and Lactobacillus create the tie that binds all the components. The end result is a complex ale that is playfully sour, light, and refreshing. 6.8% ABV / Fort Collins, CO / Availability: Limited
Green Flash Sea to Sea – an unfiltered Zwickel lager layered with German Pilsner malts, Hallertau Mittelfreüh and Czech Saaz hops, 2-row barley, and traditional Pilsner yeast. This sessionable brew has a light body with subtle sweet malt and fruity hop flavors, notable lager yeast, and a crisp, clean finish. 4% ABV / San Diego, CA / Availability: Decent
Saint Arnold Boiler Room – Boiler Room is a light bodied but surprisingly flavorful sour wheat beer. The nose of the beer has a light Hersbrucker hop note and a distinct funkiness. The taste is sweet malt quickly going into a tart body and finish. The sour and malt flavors balance well all the way through creating a very refreshing beverage, akin to drinking a tart lemonade or limeade. 3.7% ABV / Houston, TX / Beeradvocate 86 / Availability: Plenty
Grapevine La Saison de Festivals – La Saison des Festivals is a wonderful saison boasting a rich grapefruit flavor derived solely from fermentation character and Mosaic hops. 7% ABV / Grapevine, TX / Availability: Good
Texian Black Jesus – Dark Sour aged on Tart cherries. Fermented with Brettanomyces and Lactobacillus. 6% ABV / Richmond, TX / Availability: Good
Boulevard Saison Brett 2016* – Saison-Brett, based on the very popular Tank 7, is assertively dry hopped, then bottle conditioned with various yeasts, including Brettanomyces, a wild strain that imparts a distinctive earthy quality. Though this farmhouse ale was given three months of bottle age prior to release, further cellaring will continue to enhance the “Brett” character. 8.5% ABV / Kansas City, MO / Ratebeer 99 / Availability: Extremely Limited / *Arriving Friday
Breckenridge King’s Dish – A dark full-flavored beer characterized by intense malt flavors. 7.8% ABV / Denver, CO / Availability: Good
