Pro and Anti-Oktoberfests

We got ourselves a great event tomorrow. New Austin brewery Family Business drops by from 5-8pm to sample three of their drafts on Friday: the Fox rye lager, King Biscuit ESB, and the Grackle imperial stout. And on top of that, we have another fantastic Friday surprise: the debut of Houston’s Spindle Tap Brewery. We’ll be tapping their Houston Haze IPA right at 4pm.

And we know this city is flush with marzens and pumpkins right now. But if they aren’t quite your thing, we got you covered, with our monthly Style Night. Join WhichCraft and The Beer Museum on Monday October 8th, as we taste and learn about dark, seedy underbelly of the German beer world. Put down the Oktoberfest and explore some lesser known German beers such as Schwarzbier, Dunkelweizen, Eisbock and Doppelbock. This event will be hosted at WhichCraft Tap Room. The Beer Museum will be setting up the traveling roadshow version of the museum’s exhibits and we will dive deep into the history of these oft-maligned beers, their origins, and their brewing processes. Whichcraft’s own Certified Cicerone Chuck Stephens will also provide in-depth knowledge about the ingredients used in each beer and tasting techniques. Get tickets here.

Finally, we’re into our first week of October’s new Brewery of the Month: 4th Tap. Pick up 6pks of their +2 Vitality blonde, Can You Dig It amber, and Kung Fu Robot IPA for $5.99. All month! No tricks, all treat.

New Beers This Week

Back in Stock: Freetail Bat Country

Oskar Blues Death by Coconut – Intense pure liquid cacao flavors swirl with popping coconut aromas, all supported by a semi-sweet porter made from loads of our dark chocolate and extra dark caramel malt. This limited release specialty comes around once a year to satisfy that sweet tooth, so get ’em while you can before they disappear. 6.5% ABV / Longmont, CO / RateBeer 97 / Availability: Decent

Lagunitas Passion Grass – This smooth and drinkable West by Midwest ale is brewed with some passion fruit juice added for that pleasant summery-ness and rounded off with a special zing of lemongrass. It’s best imbibed with your ‘buds. 4.6% ABV / Petaluma, CA / Availability: Good

Cigar City Maduro – A hearty brown ale that benefits from the silky mouthfeel provided by oatmeal, pairs great with cigars. 5.5% ABV / Tampa, FL / RateBeer 91 / Availability: Decent

Stone Enjoy by 10.31.18 – You have in your hands a devastatingly fresh double IPA. While freshness is a key component of many beers – especially big, citrusy, floral IPAs – they’ve taken it further, a lot further, in this IPA. You see, they specifically brewed it NOT to last. They’ve not only gone to extensive lengths to ensure that you’re getting this beer in your hands within an extraordinarily short window, they made sure that the Enjoy By date isn’t randomly etched in tiny text somewhere on the bottle, to be overlooked by all but the most attentive of retailers and beer fans. Instead, they’ve sent a clear message with the name of the beer itself that there is no better time than right now to enjoy this IPA. 9.4% ABV / Escondido, CA / RateBeer 100 / Availability: Decent

Great Divide Fresh Hop – Brewing with fresh hops is a big endeavor, requiring four to five times the hop volume compared to using pelletized hops. Although the process is complex, it brings impressive results: Fresh Hop is an American-style pale ale with moderate hop bitterness marked by a unique and intensely grassy hop flavor and aroma. Fresh Hop is a superbly refreshing, medium bodied, light-copper colored pale ale. 6.1% ABV / Denver, CO / RateBeer 96 / Availability: Decent

Real Ale Cranberry Gose – A historic style from Northern Germany, Gose is a slightly sour wheat beer known for hints of coriander and a unique saltiness. For a festive twist on the style, they add cranberry puree to the fermenter. The result is a delightfully dry and refreshingly tart beer full of familiar flavors to help you welcome the cooler temperatures and changing leaves. 4.4% ABV / Blanco, TX / Availability: Good

Lake Austin Juicy IPA – Double dry-hopped with more than 250 lbs. of tropical hop blends. 6.5% ABV / Austin, TX

Lake Austin Juicy DIPA – A total of 350 lbs. of citrusy hops and lupulin powder. This one is less tropical, according to the brewery; instead, the beer bursts with notes of grapefruit and Meyer lemon. 7.5% ABV / Austin, TX

Ballast Point Grunion – This award-winning hoppy pale ale is named after the tiny local fish known for late night frolics on shore. A pair of new hop varieties lend strong yet balanced summer melon aromas and herbal flavors, while a soft caramel malt sweetness holds it all together. 5.5% ABV / San Diego, CA / RateBeer 97 / Availability: Good (Arriving Friday)

Thirsty Planet Smittlefest – Deep rich amber color. Toffeeish malt flavor and aroma. Big and full. 7% ABV / Austin, TX / Availability: Good (Arriving Friday)

Bell’s Special Double Cream Stout – Sweeter and smoother than Kalamazoo Stout. A beer for s pecial winter occasions. Great with chocolate desserts. 6.1% ABV / Comstock, MI / RateBeer 99 / Availability: Very Limited (Arriving Friday)

New Belgium Oak Spire Bourbon Barrel Ale – A limited-edition collaboration between New Belgium and Knob Creek, Oakspire is a unique bourbon barrel ale aged with bourbon-steeped oak spirals and char from inside the barrel. Smooth notes of toffee, vanilla and caramel wrap up with a pleasantly warm finish. 9% ABV / Fort Collins, CO / Availability: Limited (Arriving Friday)

New Beers on Draft at WhichCraft Taproom

Full Draft List Available on our Website

Family Business The Fox – Rye lager. Dry, spicy rye and noble Saaz hops in perfect harmony with a Pilsner Malt foundation. Named for one of the property’s wild residents, who always seems to appear at curious times. 4.9% ABV / Austin, TX

Family Business King Biscuit ESB – Biscuity caramel malt character is buoyed by the subtle presence of floral English hops. A crisp, clean finish makes this an ideal session brew. 5% ABV / Austin, TX

Family Business The Grackle – Hill Country imperial stout. Rich, robust, maillard. Notes of coffee, prunes, baker’s chocolate, and heavily roasted malts are complimented by a lingering alcohol warmth. Full bodied and full of attitude. 8.9% ABV / Austin, TX

4th Tap Can You Dig It? – A full-bodied, super crushable, malty Amber Ale. 6% ABV / Austin, TX

Live Oak Hefeweizen – Has a cloudy, straw-colored appearance with a thick, creamy head. 5.2% ABV / Austin, TX / RateBeer 98

8th Wonder Rocket Fuel (Nitro) – Vietnamese coffee porter. Infused with cold brew coffee and milk sugar. A pleasantly robust dark roast complemented by subtle, creamy sweetness. Prepare for delicious liftoff. 4.6% ABV / Houston, TX / RateBeer 93

Spindle Tap Houston Haze – Bursting with orange and grapefruit flavor from heaping amounts of Citra, and pineapple, mango and other tropical fruit notes from Galaxy, Houston Haze is a 6.5% double-dry-hopped delight. Houston Haze features a soft, full-bodied creaminess with just the right amount of astringency. The body helps amplify the beer’s character while serving as a canvas for the flavor complexity, a result of the interplay of the heavy post-boil hop load and the London Ale III yeast strain. 6.5% ABV / Houston, TX / RateBeer 91 (Tapping Friday at 4pm)
